New Modal for Profile Photo Upload in Gamification Updates

·
·

Joel Primack made a really good point in our gamification changelog that many of your communities have users who have yet to add profile photos. We also surmised that some folks would want a different photo to be generated with the epic frames that they have just earned. So we went to work in the last few minutes to fashion a ticket for how to resolve this. Here are our thoughts:

  1. 1.

Instead of generating the photo right away, we will now pop up the following modal.

  2. 2.

This modal will present the frame (more on this below) and an option to upload a new photo before submitting

  3. 3.

When a user submits, the photo will be generated and sent to them for download.

Our questions:

  • Do the outlined steps above make sense?

  • Should the frame be shown to the user? While it makes it more clear what will take place, we also realize that some of you might want to hide the frame in order to prevent copycats. This might be something we consider for the future to prevent misuse, but we would like your opinions now in case it’s a real concern.

Thanks all. Let’s keep building together 🏗️

It feels overkill, usually no one uses full body pics as profile image, so likely the frame autoapplied, removing the step from the end user experience will increase usage IMHO. Also, is there an API, that allows you to automatically update the profile pic with this frame applied afterwards? I can imagine on slack itself to happen automatically, but send the full profile(with frame) back to the user with the bot with a social share predefined copy recommended. Hey you can use this image on your LI profile as achievement as TKNGT community member. Does that makes sense? Or I’m asking too much? 😅

I don’t understand the problem you’re trying to solve. That may be simply because I’m not familiar enough with the product.

Hi Zach! Thanks for the update and for addressing this issue so quickly. The proposed steps make a lot of sense to me. Having a modal to upload a new photo before generating the frame is a great idea, as it allows users to update their profile and showcase their achievements more effectively. Regarding showing the frame to the user, I see the benefits of both approaches. On one hand, displaying the frame helps users understand what their new profile photo will look like. On the other hand, there might be concerns about potential misuse if the frame is visible before submission. It might be worth considering a solution where the frame is shown in a way that provides users with a preview but doesn’t fully reveal the design to prevent copying.

Thanks Francisco Opazo for the insights. We want to do all of what you mention, especially the automatic add profile photo. However, it will require users to give permissions to do so and we wanted to focus first on an MVP before trying to walk users through a login flow. I do like the social predefined copy. We could probably add that as an optional parameter on badges. We’ll have to see what happens as we roll this out. DeMario Bell you make a great point. I wonder if we could generate a mock photo of a person silhouette with the frame around them. I could see this both (1) explaining to users what will happen when they press generate photo and (2) make it more difficult to copy the frame. And hi Piper Wilson, happy to answer any questions in a DM if you want to dive deeper. This feature is for gamification and building a culture of recognition within communities. We are launching a badging and milestones feature that would allow Slack communities to recognize their users for specific actions taken.
