Launching Slack and Tightknit Together for Member Communities: Challenges and Lessons Learned

Hey all! The company I work for, Thrifty Traveler, is exploring launching a member Slack community this year, and we’re considering pairing it with Tightknit to make things more accessible, especially for our less tech-savvy members. We already have a pretty active premium Facebook group where many of those members are most engaged, so I’m especially curious about the transition piece. Has anyone here launched Slack alongside Tightknit within an established community? I’d love to hear what worked well, what didn’t, and any lessons learned—especially around onboarding, adoption, and getting members to shift platforms.

Eeny meany minie mo... I think I'll pick on Karisa D. for this one since she's one of our most recent introductions and works in the education space (a very FB-friendly group). But of course hope others hop in too!

Hey Kat E.! Zach is putting me on the spot here, haha. I am definitely not an expert (yet), but I can share what we are seeing so far 🙂 I've moved a community from Facebook to Mighty Networks in the past and the biggest thing I learned was to keep the overlap period short to keep the momentum from splitting between two places. For the tech-savvy piece, that is a big reason why we are excited to have Tightknit. We have plenty of members who aren't Slack savvy or just can't use the Slack app at work, so we are hoping the web view and directory make it feel more like a community home and be easier for those folks to access and interact with the community. We haven't done our big reveal to members yet, but the Luma integration for events is something members have already noticed and appreciate. We are still figuring it out as we go but happy to chat more as we settle in!

Hey Kat E. although it's not specific to moving over to Slack/Tightknit, there's a very practical article by Noelle Flowers about considerations for migrating off Facebook Groups. It is part 2 in a series, but this one is probably more relevant to your situation.

Kat E. Anytime, happy to keep in touch! Luma has been a lifesaver for our events, previously everything was done manually via Google forms which was not efficient at all 😅
