My vote is only be used by admins and even then only when absolutely needed. Here for small/medium updates Channel for big updates, alerts

Slack has user groups, but they're paid-only and admin-controlled - members can't opt themselves in That said, if you're willing to get a little custom, you can build the opt-in layer. The API supports it; Slack just doesn't surface it natively Surprised more communities don't do this as it solves most of the @.here anxiety and boosts engagement (people who opted in actually respond)

I think @channel makes sense when it's relevant to the whole community. Sounds obvious, but if it's something you believe is useful for everyone in the community and let's say someone is not pleased with the bump, then either:
1.
that person shouldn't be in your community
2.
you misjudged the relevancy of the post
@here is great for "hey I think this is really helpful information" and ya announcements only OR when there is an urgent problem
Also, does it change by the number of members in the channel
No it doesn't change! 10 members = 100,000 members. Just as long as the content is relevant.

Fair points on relevance - but "did I misjudge?" is hard to know until people are already annoyed Opt-in notifications sidestep that: if someone joined @announcements, you're not guessing - they asked for it (or you opted them in by default and they haven't opted out - sort of like email subscriptions) On size, I'd push back a little:
At 10 members, an @here is a nudge
At 100k, it’s a broadcast

I belong to a couple of communities that use channel seemingly all the time. It honestly makes me want to leave. I complained about it in one of the communities, but they didn't cut down. I don't know what that says.

I agree with Piper ☝️ one community I'm in does it multiple times a week and mostly for their webinars and I find it really annoying. I tend to avoid it, personally

Thanks everyone 😊 Based on the feedback from y'all and some members, I'm building an opt-in/opt-out process via 2 Slack workflows that allow members to join a Slack user group.
