Preferences and Management of User Joined Channel Notifications in Slack Communities

I'm starting to see a lot more "user joined channel notifications" - I could have sworn this used to be disabled in Slack for channels above a certain size (or at least that's what I remember) but it doesn't seem to happen anymore. What do people prefer? I'm interested in if you like seeing these messages or if we should remove them. How do you approach in your community?
